Couple accused of drunk driving with children in car

In Oklahoma and in other states, the protection of children in motor vehicles is of primary concern to law enforcement. This is why anyone suspected of drunk driving may face even harsher penalties if convicted of doing so with a child in the car. One couple is facing such possibilities following a recent traffic incident.

Police say a 36-year-old woman was speeding and made an unsafe lane change shortly after midnight, prompting them to pull her over. Officers claim to have detected the odor of alcohol in the car as they approached, and the woman allegedly had an open can of beer in the vehicle. Police say the woman gave conflicting information about how much she had drunk that night, and she supposedly failed field sobriety tests. Police took her into custody, and while she struggled, her husband allegedly climbed into the driver's seat of the vehicle and drove off.

An officer pursued the vehicle, which reportedly sped away. Officers pursued it for several miles but the vehicle finally stopped on an exit ramp. The 37-year-old man was charged with eluding arrest and reckless driving. Both parents were charged with felony child endangerment for having their two children unrestrained in the back seat while driving under the influence.

The seriousness of these charges could mean long-term consequences for these parents, potentially jeopardizing their parental rights. Those arrested and charged with drunk driving in Oklahoma have the right to a strong defense to fight the charges against them. Having an attorney to advise them may protect their futures and diminish the negative consequences.
