When it comes to laws that deal with impaired drivers, Oklahoma has some of the strictest in the country. A conviction for drunk driving may have a serious impact on a person's life. Subsequent arrests may result in felony charges. One man finds himself in just such a situation recently after an accident.
The collision occurred just before 10 p.m. when witnesses say a white pickup truck ran through a stop light and struck two vehicles. No one was injured in the collision. Apparently, the truck continued through the intersection and drove for two blocks before crashing into concrete barricades across the opening of a bridge. When officers arrived on the scene, they say the man had fled in his vehicle.
Police employed a search helicopter and located a 35-year-old man inside a parked car about 30 minutes later. Believing the man to be the driver of the pickup truck, they took him into custody. He was charged with driving under a suspended license, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. Police also say the man's record shows previous convictions involving alcohol and other substances, and outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions in Oklahoma.
This man may be justifiably concerned for his future. It was likely that concern which prompted him to allegedly leave the scene of the accident. Since time is of the essence with any drunk driving charge, the driver would benefit from contacting a lawyer as soon as possible. His attorney will certainly examine the evidence against him and focus on preparing a strong defense.
